Provincial Norms Print or save as PDF

The calculation of provincial norms for a given measure is based on the availability of data and whether this data meets established thresholds ensuring a sufficient sample size is available to produce a statistically sound norm.

Existing Provincial Norms

Prior to 2018-19, two provinces had provincial norms: New Brunswick and Alberta.

New Brunswick norms were not updated in January 2019. They were released in 2017, based on 2014-15 data, and are therefore within our standard 5-year timeframe. Alberta norms were updated as they were beyond the 5-year timeframe. See January 2019 Norm Update – FAQ for more information.

New Provincial Norms (January 2019)

In January 2019, provincial norms were released for the following additional provinces: Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec (Anglophone) and Prince Edward Island. More details for each province are provided below.

We do not have sufficient data to calculate provincial norms for British Columbia or Nova Scotia at this time.

Accessing Provincial Norms

Provincial norms are accessed via your Interactive Charts on www.ourschool.net, and are available at both elementary and secondary levels. At the secondary level, there are two separate norms available for middle and secondary schools, providing the most meaningful point of comparison for your school.

  1. Navigate to your Interactive Charts using the View Reports menu.

  2. In your Interactive Charts, simply select the “Provincial” drop-down menu and choose a norm.

  3. The norms will appear as an orange line in your chart.

Note: The orange line shows the provincial median for a given measure. The shaded orange area above and below the line represents the distribution of schools above and below the median. The area above represents how tightly the closest 25% of schools fall above the median, and the area below represents the 25% who fall below.
